Often times I write something that offends at least one person. This is one of those times that inevitably I will offend or piss off at least one person.
There is something I've never understood. Well two things. The first one is eating in your car. I don't get this. I just went to grab some lunch for my boss. I went to a drive through and while I was leaving I noticed the car in front of me, pull forward, park and eat their food in their car????? Why? Why if you have time to leave work and get food, and even sit and eat it, would you not go inside the place and eat? I've never understood it. Back in the day when my cousin worked for me we used to take our lunch and drive to our neighborhood park and eat it. However we would get out of the car, walk over to the little table and sit and eat it. On days the weather sucked we would get our food, or pack it and at least make sure we went into the back and sat at the break room to eat. I honestly can't understand when I drive by a park and see people who took the time, on a sunny warm day to drive there and then choose to sit in their cars and eat! WHY? I also don't understand eating and driving. I have never been that person who can just grab a burger and eat while I drive. NO! I may eat a few fries but I always go and sit somewhere.
So explain to me, why on earth do you go get fast food, drive through and then choose to park and eat in your car rather then eating inside? Are you embarrassed to be eating there, ashamed of how you look shy???? What is it?
The second thing I don't get is not eating at the table at your house. I've never been that person who eats their meal at the coffee table, or the counter or in my bed. I eat at the table. My husband and son do to. The ONLY two exceptions to this rule are eating a bowl of ice cream on the couch or when I am sick SOMETIMES I will eat at the couch but even then I drag my lazy ass up off the couch and eat at the table. My family used to eat at the table sometimes, the living room sometimes and then sometimes in separate rooms. I hated that. At my house we usually turn off the TV, turn on some music and sit and eat. Also we all stay at the table until we are ALL done. I can't understand why you would sit at your coffee table and eat. Or why a family wouldn't sit down and eat. Even if my husband and I are eating alone we still go sit at the table. And 90% of the time if my husband is eating and I'm not, like at lunch or a late dinner, I still come to the table, sit down and talk with him. I hate that we have become a society where sitting down as a family is no longer important. Even if we grab Taco Bell we still come and eat at our table. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Even snacks. Even if I am sitting and having some chips and salsa I go sit at my dining room table. Hence the word DINING room
I just wish I could understand people who can't take the time to eat their lunch at a table or a park or anywhere but their car. I don't understand families not eating together. Are you eating in your car because the act of getting out and walking the ten steps in and ten steps out is to much activity for you? Are you eating in your car because you are ashamed at your food choice? Please, please explain this stuff to me, because I really really don't get it!

I am so with you on that. I have no clue why people use the drive thru and then eat in their cars. It is beyond me. My hubby comes from a family that did not always eat their meals at the table. Mine however did. That was the first argument we had. Now we dine at the table all the time but I see him itching to get back to what he was doing before we sat down for dinner. He's getting better by the day though. Now he even gets up early on the weekends to set the table. Lovely with tablecloth and flowers etc. It is like he is a whole new person.
When I have kids I so want to teach them the importance of being a family at the dining room table.
de-lurking here (LOVE your blog, btw) I work in retail, so when I take my lunch I always eat in my car (no matter what weather) so I can be ALONE. I also read while I eat, and that's hard to do in a breakroom or restaurant. About 50% of my co-workers do the same.
At home ...we always eat at the table. Ummm, mostly because we are in the middle of turning the second floor of our house into an apartment for us and the living room isn't done yet! We will still eat at the table when the living room is done, cause we have a tv in the kitchen hahahaha
I don't do the eating in my car thing AFTER i've parked somewhere..occasionaly if I'm in a hurry..I'll eat and drive..safe I know..lookout!
But that brings me to why I at least think people eat in their car....our "Society" has taught us all..we're to damn busy. to busy to get out, to busy and bothered to go in and talk to people, to busy to enjoy nourishing our bodies. I agree with you. We do need to slow down and eat!!!! And if you're home...at the table! My kids eat snacks at the coffee table, but not meals!
I never eat in my car. But I (almost) never eat fast food, so it's never really an option :P
I always had to eat at the dinner table with my family. EVERY NIGHT. So, that is something we will do when we have kids, however, at this point in time we eat together (breakfast and dinner), but in the kitchen (not as formal as our dining room, but same idea)- While we read the paper, usually. We're still sitting down and having a meal- but we're multitasking. We're BUSY!
I know at least one reason, but GEEZ your guesses are kind of mean! Like, "Is it because you're LOSERS, is THAT why?"
I have sometimes eaten in a fast-food parking lot when there is a child asleep in the car and so I don't want to go in. I have also done it when I don't feel like being in the dumb restaurant: fast food places don't exactly have Atmosphere, and I'd say my car is an improvement. I can sit there reading a book and/or listening to the radio.
I usually take the food home and eat it there, though.
I think that "having dinner together as a family" is something a lot of people think is important whether or not it actually IS important. It's like "going to church every Sunday": some people think it's VITAL TO THE FABRIC OF SOCIETY, and everyone else begs to differ. I can go either way on it. Right now our family eats in two shifts: we sit with the kids while they eat, and then we eat by ourselves later. This gives us Couple Time, and also keeps dinner from being a melee. But we're adding a dining room onto our house now, and might all eat together once we have a table that seats all seven of us.
I do this occasionally. Sit in the car and eat after going through the drive though, that is. I am with coffee slut on this one. I leave the office and drive through somewhere and then sit in my car so I can be ALONE! My husband is always at home or I am at work or with family and I never have alone time. I use that time to read in the peace and quiet of my own car.
I drive and eat because my appointments are sometimes so close together that I have to. I'm a real estate appraiser, working from home so it's a matter of whether I am going to eat or not that day.
On the table thing. A month and a half ago I would have agreed with you. We always sat at the table, as a family, for dinner. Now, it's too painful so far. It was our day end thing. All of us, at the table. He's not here so sitting at the table is a huge reminder of that. The kids eat at the table and I basically don't eat.
I don't eat at the dining table when I'm alone. It feels so lonely because the table is just facing the wall plus I won't enjoy the food. I go to the couch and eat while watching tv. However if I'm with someone, I really eat at the table.
I agree with you on most of this post, the only time i will eat in may car is if i am hungover and i have stopped for emergency food like a greasy sandwich and then i am normaly looking like a dog who dying so i wouldnt want anyone to see me!
We always eat at the table with the exception of snacks and takeaways once Billy is in bed. The other reason is i verg on having OCD and i hate the mess that it makes eating in daft places my house and car are stupidly tidy so to contaminate them with food would drive me barmy!
