Okay moms I need advice. I'm slowly learning how to punish my son. When I say punish I mean put him in timeout for about 23 seconds. However what I don't know is when is an appropriate time for punishment. This afternoon I was doing dishes and I realized Brandon was being FAR to quite. Soo I sneak around the house until I find him. Sigh! He was in the bathroom. He had unrolled all of the toilet paper in small amounts, dunked em in the toilet and then suck little wet toilet paper balls all over the bathroom. Then he took the little freshener thing I had in the toiled off and dropped it in the toilet. When I came in he was using the plunger to try and scoop out the toilet freshener thing. I told him no, picked him up, washed his hands and took him out of the bathroom. My mom said I should have put him in time out.
SHOULD I HAVE?
On one hand I felt like it was mostly my fault for leaving the door open and not watching him. On another hand I thought it was freaking hilarious and so very very cute. And then on the rational hand I really felt like maybe I should have punished him. BUT really, does something like that really constitute a time out?
Please moms, I'm a punishment rookie. All help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think that constitutes a time out. Tonight we had several boughts of hitting and throwing things. To me those things constitute a time out, obviously. My rule-of-thumb is that if it can hurt someone else mentally or physically then a time out is warranted. Now, that is not to say that he couldn't have gotten hurt doing this (slipping on the wet floor for example and lets not forget the germ factor). But I think your rational is right.
I was just thinking the same thing tonight though because I also give Little Man a chance when he hits or throws. I tell him we don't do that, it can hurt other people (me, tonight, taking a block to the jaw @ full force from only about 2 feet away) but I try to give him a chance to stop before taking him to time out.
Plus what is the "proper" place to do time out. We go to a chair in the corner of the room. Sometimes I sit him on my lap and others he sits there by himself, but we count to 24 (number of age in months).
So I'm not a mom (I am a teacher close enough haha), but I have some advice that may or may not be helpful. I would say that since this was his first time doing something like this, you can tell him no and not use time out...if it becomes an everyday thing, then I would suggest using time out. And as for how long, I have always heard that you should put them in time out one minute for every year old they are. That's my rule of thumb when I watch little ones anyway...of course it doesn't work with third graders!! Hope it was of some help!
aww. cute and messy!
I agree: first offence= let him know it was wrong, no punishment. Just be clear and look him in the eye and say "No no!"
If he does it repeatedly, time-outs are warranted.
I've also followed the 'one minute per every year of age' rule and it works great!
